Herpes Test

Herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 is commonly referred to as a ‘cold sore’ but can also cause genital herpes. The other strain, HSV-2 is the main cause of genital herpes. HSV is transmitted through direct contact with infected areas. Prevalence of herpes is relatively high – it is estimated that globally 67% of people have HSV-1 and 13% have HSV-2. In many cases, herpes does not present with symptoms. However, if you do develop symptoms you may experience:

Symptoms

  • Pain or itching around genital area
  • Small red or white bumps
  • Blisters that may rupture and ooze and bleed
  • Painful urination
  • In women, unusual vaginal discharge

Why Get Tested For Herpes?

While both HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections are lifelong, it is important to get to tested to avoid spreading the disease to your sexual partner when symptoms are present.

When To Get Tested For Herpes?

You can get tested at any time, but you are advised to take the test 12 days after having unprotected sex. To test for herpes, you will need to take a blood test carried out by one of our trained healthcare professionals.
